Thinking about a Morehead Inn wedding? This historic inn in Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood is all chandeliers, antiques, a grand staircase, and a garden courtyard tucked behind the house. It feels like getting married in a beautiful old Southern home, because that’s exactly what it is. Here’s what to know as you plan, plus what I’d think about as your photographer. I photographed Bethany and Ethan’s wedding at The Morehead Inn, and every photo in this post is from their day.

About The Morehead Inn

The Morehead Inn was built in 1917 as a private home for C.C. Coddington, the businessman credited with bringing the first Buick dealership south of the Mason-Dixon line. Today it’s a boutique inn and event venue at 1122 East Morehead Street, just a few minutes from Uptown Charlotte.

Inside, you’ll find the Tea Room, the Library, the Solarium, a sweeping staircase, and fireplaces throughout. Outside, there’s a front patio and a private courtyard surrounded by gardens. It’s an intimate venue, and that’s a big part of its charm.

Ceremony + Reception Spaces

  • Outdoor ceremony: On the grounds or in the courtyard, for larger guest counts.
  • Indoor ceremony: A fireplace ceremony inside the inn works well for smaller weddings, about 75 guests or fewer.
  • Cocktail hour: Guests mingle on the main floor and front patio while we take portraits.
  • Reception: Dinner inside the inn for smaller groups, or in the courtyard (often tented) for bigger celebrations.

At Bethany and Ethan’s wedding, the ceremony was in the brick courtyard with guests gathered close, and dinner was inside at long tables under the chandeliers. Shooting down from the staircase gave me a view of the whole room, which is one of my favorite angles at this venue.

Good to Know Before You Book

  • Guest count: Listings put the max around 150. Bigger weddings usually move dinner outdoors, which means planning for a tent.
  • Overnight stays: The inn has 12 guest rooms between the main house and the carriage house, and couples can book the whole inn for the weekend. Getting ready on-site makes the morning so easy.
  • Catering: Catering, bar, and rentals are handled by the venue’s exclusive caterer, and tables, chairs, china, and glassware are included.
  • Busy seasons: Spring (March to June) and fall (September to November) book up first.

Rates and policies change, so always confirm current pricing and details with the venue.

What I’d Plan for as Your Photographer

  1. That staircase. The grand staircase is one of my favorite spots for a bridal portrait and a dress shot. I’d plan a few minutes there before the ceremony.
  2. Getting ready in the guest rooms. Four-poster beds, antique details, and soft window light make for gorgeous getting-ready photos, so it’s worth booking a room for the morning.
  3. Golden hour in the courtyard. The gardens glow in evening light. I’d save about 20-30 minutes for portraits roughly 45 minutes before sunset.
  4. A first look. With cocktail hour happening in the same house, a first look means you can actually enjoy it with your guests.
  5. A rain plan. The inn’s indoor rooms make a beautiful backup, so talk through the indoor layout and tent options early.
  6. Neighborhood portraits. Dilworth’s tree-lined streets and historic homes are right outside the door for a quick walk and a few relaxed photos.

Is The Morehead Inn Right for You?

It’s a great fit if you want an intimate wedding with timeless, historic character, a garden setting, and everyone staying in one place for the weekend. If you’re planning a really large guest list, you’ll want to talk through the tent setup early, or look at a bigger venue.
