A Middleton Place wedding feels like stepping into a painting. The gardens date back to the 1740s and are some of the oldest landscaped gardens in the country, set right along the Ashley River just outside downtown Charleston. Live oaks, terraced lawns, reflecting water and the most gorgeous green everywhere you look.

As a Charleston wedding photographer, here’s what I love about Middleton Place, and how to plan your day so your photos feel timeless and true to you.

Middleton Place wedding ceremonies under the oaks

So many Middleton Place ceremonies happen beneath a sprawling live oak in the gardens, surrounded by greenery. The shade from those oaks is a gift: it softens harsh Southern sun and gives us even, flattering light on your faces. It’s also just plain magical when your guests are gathered under those branches.

Cocktail hour + the gardens

While your guests are at cocktail hour, we get to wander. The gardens are huge, and that variety (water, lawns, hedges, old brick and oak-lined paths) means your portraits can feel totally different from one corner to the next. I like to scout before your day so we use every minute well and don’t keep you away from your party too long.

Reception + the evening light

Middleton has reception spaces right on the grounds, so the move from ceremony to cocktail hour to dinner feels easy for everyone. As the sun drops, the light across the lawns and toward the river turns warm and golden. I always save a few minutes for a sunset walk; it’s often everyone’s favorite part of the gallery.

Little details that make it Middleton

There are fun, only-at-Middleton moments too. Couples have taken photos with the sheep that graze on the grounds, which I think is the most charming thing ever. If you’re into it, tell me, and we’ll make it happen.

Timeline tips

Middleton is big, so build a little walking time into the timeline, especially for family photos and portraits. In summer, plan your portraits for the cooler, softer light later in the day and keep midday photos in the shade of the oaks. And bring comfortable shoes for the in-between moments. Your feet will thank you.
